Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO)

The Codex Committee on Fats and Oils was established with the first Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) meeting in 1963, and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was named as host. Its remit was to elaborate draft standards for fats and oils of animal, vegetable and marine origin, excluding olive oil and margarine, standards for which the International Olive Oil Council (now International Olive Council, IOC) and the International Federation of Margarine Associations (IFMA) were responsible. The following year, however, CAC widened the scope of CCFO’s work to include olive oil and margarine within its terms of reference. The Codex Committee works closely with IOC and IFMA. 

CCFO was adjourned sine die in 1987 and worked by correspondence for six years. In 1993 a physical meeting was convened due to the heavy workload of the Committee and regular meetings resumed. The Committee remains active today. In 2009, Malaysia took over as host of the Committee.
