CTF / Strengthening food safety through global collaboration

A workshop and training event is being carried out in the Republic of Korea this week, hosted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in collaboration with the Codex Trust Fund (CTF), with the participation of delegates from El Salvador, Guatemala, Kenya, Mali, Timor-Leste and Zambia.

The workshop brings together government officials, Codex contact points, and food safety experts to enhance capacities for effective participation in Codex work. Through interactive sessions and practical exercises, participants are learning how to develop national positions, engage in international standard setting, and strengthen food safety systems.

“Together, we aim to build stronger, science-based food standards that protect consumers and facilitate fair trade globally,” said, Simone Moraes Raszl, CTF Coordinator and Unit Head, Standards and Scientific Advice on Nutrition and Food Safety, WHO, who was speaking at the event. “Stay tuned for updates and join us in promoting safer food for all!”

“The participants selected among CTF beneficiary countries have been given the unique opportunity to learn from the experience of MFDS on how to turn Codex standards and norms into action to strengthen national food safety systems and how to improve their participation in Codex meetings,” Moraes Raszl continued.

Mahmoud Abdoul Camara, from the Ministry of Health and Social Development of Mali agreed: “Participating in this workshop is a valuable opportunity to strengthen our national capacity in Codex work,” he said. “The exchanges and practical insights shared are highly relevant for enhancing the effectiveness of the National Codex Committee in Mali and improving our food safety system.”

Other participants also commented enthusiastically: “The workshop is timely, insightful and very useful in helping us to strengthen Codex activities in our country. The Republic of Korea is truly a great example of a robust and well-coordinated food control system,” said Maputa Kamelete from Zambia. Her compatriot, Doreen Sakala added: “Participating in the WHO training on implementing good Codex practices is vital for strengthening our country's food safety system and aligning it with global standards. It is equipping us with the knowledge and skills needed to better protect public health, respond to emerging food safety risks, and ensure products are trusted in international trade. It has also enhanced a better understanding on how to re-organize food safety systems. Also, learning what other countries are doing in Codex is important to improve our Codex system.”

Lawrence Aloo of Kenya said: “This workshop on Implementing good Codex practices by member states from different regions and at different levels or stages of Codex membership offers a good platform for knowledge sharing. My expectations include learning how Korea and other participating member states implement the robust national food safety system and translate it to what we are developing in Kenya, the national food safety surveillance system, (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) HACCP system, testing laboratory systems. I trust we will acquire better skills for impactful participation in Codex work.”
