Türkiye celebrates 60 years of Codex

Türkiye celebrates 60 years of Codex

The Codex Contact Point (CCP) for Türkiye under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry planned several seminars and other initiatives to promote awareness on Codex in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC).

Raising Awareness on Codex Alimentarius - Seminars

The first seminar was held on 17 January 2023 with a detailed presentation on the Codex Alimentarius Commission, its structure, subsidiary bodies, Codex texts and their importance in the context of the Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS) and the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

A second seminar, “Training about the participation in the Codex meetings and the use of the Online Commenting System (OCS)”, held on 4 April 2023, was aimed to share knowledge with the new members joining the Codex team in Türkiye. Participants heard about Codex, its working modalities and different mechanisms, and focused on the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils and its meetings. A hands-on session on the Online Commenting System (OCS), concluded the event.

The Turkish Codex Newsletter

Among other initiatives to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Codex, the Codex Contact Point for Türkiye also started to publish a monthly Codex newsletter on the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The newsletter includes information about Codex meetings, circular letters and electronic working groups, and shares comments submitted on Codex documents and the relevant news for the national Codex legislation.

Teamwork in the CCEURO region

Under a regional project funded by the Codex Trust Fund, Türkiye provided technical support to Azerbaijan to establish a sustainable and well-organized National Codex Committee. The results of this project were presented by the Turkish CCP during the event “Advancing Food Standards and Codex Participation in Europe and Central Asia” held in Baku, Azerbaijan, 14-15 September 2023. The CCP underlined the importance of teamwork in Codex and informed participants about the international experiences of Türkiye in Codex and further celebrated the 60th anniversary of Codex.
