CTF / Regional training of trainers on Codex, data generation and submission for standards setting
A regional East African Community (EAC) Training of Trainers (ToT) session on data generation to support Codex standards setting activities was held in Zanzibar, Tanzania, 23–25 July 2025. The event was supported by the Codex Trust Fund group project as well as the EAC Market Access Upgrade Programme (MARKUP II), which is implemented through the International Trade Centre.
The ToT was facilitated by the Global Food Regulatory Science Society, which is led by former Codex Alimentarius Commission Vice-Chairperson, Prof. Samuel Godefroy. Focus was on approaches for generating, collecting and utilizing scientific data for the establishment of Codex standards, and improving the practical use and application of the Global Environment Monitoring System - Food Contamination Monitoring and Assessment Programme (GEMS/Food) database.
A key deliverable of the event was to the establishment of a regional network of experts to support with data generation and submission, which contributes to outcome 1.2 of the new Codex Strategic Plan (2026–2031). The 25 trainees were drawn from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda, as well as the EAC and MARKUP II secretariats.
