ACT / Pakistan strengthens One Health response to foodborne antimicrobial resistance at national conference

Pakistan is stepping up efforts to address foodborne antimicrobial resistance (AMR), one of the most pressing threats to public health, food safety and sustainable agriculture, through a strengthened One Health approach discussed at a national conference in Islamabad.
Held under the FAO-supported Action to Support Implementation of Codex AMR Texts (ACT) project, the two-day conference brought together more than 65 participants from federal and provincial governments, academia, laboratories and international organizations. The event focused on advancing coordinated, cross-sectoral action to address AMR risks across food systems.
Participants emphasized the urgency of a One Health approach, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration across human, animal and environmental health systems. Officials noted progress under Pakistan’s National Action Plan on AMR, while calling for improved surveillance, stronger regulation of antimicrobial use and better coordination.
Technical sessions focused on strengthening AMR surveillance, improving laboratory capacity and promoting responsible antimicrobial use in food systems, aligned with international standards such as Codex standards, guidelines and codes of practice.
The conference concluded with a roadmap prioritizing expanded integrated surveillance, stronger laboratory networks, improved regulatory frameworks and antimicrobial resistance stewardship, building on FAO-supported interventions in surveillance, policy development and capacity building. The roadmap has a focus on sustaining progress through greater government ownership, domestic financing and integration into routine national systems.
