CCNE strengthens regional coordination ahead of CAC49

As part of their continued commitment to strengthening regional coordination and enhancing participation in Codex activities, the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for the Near East (CCNE) and the Arab Industrial Development, Standardization and Mining Organization (AIDSMO) convened the 50th and 51st Meetings of Arab and CCNE Codex contact points in preparation for the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). The meetings were organized under the Arab Codex Initiative, a joint initiative implemented by AIDSMO and the Global Food Regulatory Science Society (GFoRSS) to support regional collaboration and coordinated engagement in the Codex Alimentarius process.

The two virtual meetings brought together Codex contact points, representatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization (GSO), and national and regional representatives from across the Arab and Near East regions to review and exchange views on key agenda items to be considered at CAC49. Together, the meetings provided a structured platform for regional dialogue, technical exchange, and the development of coordinated approaches on issues of common interest.

Discussions covered a broad range of topics, including standards forwarded for adoption, proposals for new work, strategic and governance matters, and emerging cross-cutting issues relevant to the future of Codex work. The meetings also addressed key regional priorities, including food labelling, fats and oils, food additives, residues of veterinary drugs, and new food sources and production systems, while identifying opportunities for enhanced regional engagement during CAC49.

The successful organization of these two preparatory meetings reflects the continued commitment of Arab and CCNE Members to science-based decision-making, regional cooperation, and active participation in the international food standards-setting process. By fostering dialogue and strengthening regional coordination ahead of CAC49, the meetings further reinforced the region's collective engagement in advancing consumer health protection and ensuring fair practices in the food trade.
