About CGECPMMP

By the time the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) was established in 1963, the Joint FAO/WHO Committee of Government Experts on the Code of Principles concerning Milk and Milk Products (CGECPMMP) had already elaborated international minimum platform standards under its Code of Principles concerning Milk and Milk Products. As this had already been accepted by at least 50 governments CAC decided to treat the CGECPMMP as a Codex committee from the outset and considered it to have exclusive competence for all questions concerning these priority products.

By 1991, many CAC Members were arguing for more regular meetings of the milk committee and for it to operate along the same lines as other Codex committees. As such, it was agreed at CAC20, to establish the Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products (CCMMP), which would subsume the work of the CGECPMMP. It was agreed that New Zealand should host this new committee.
