The Republic of Korea will host the 3rd Global Conference on Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance, 12-13 September 2023
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat of increasing concern to human and animal health. It also has implications for both food safety and food security and the economic well-being of millions of farming households. Food plays an important role in the development and spread of AMR.
Among the ongoing initiatives to tackle this issue, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea is hosting the 3rd Global Conference on Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance on 12 and 13 September 2023. The conference will be also streamed on YouTube for all Codex members and observers, as well as the general audience.
The MFDS has been leading this initiative globally since the conference was first established in September 2021. The conference main objective is to support the implementation of the Codex texts on antimicrobial Resistance adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission in 2021
This year’s theme, “One Health approach and efforts to tackle antimicrobial resistance”, reflects the importance of a multistakeholder approach to tackling AMR. The eventaims to serve as a forum to bring together all relevant sectorsthroughout the agrifood system:food business operators, academia, regulatory authorities, governmental bodies and international organizations.One of the expected outcomes, among others, is to establish a global platform on implementing Codex AMR-related texts.
The topics under discussion will be:
-
the collaborative efforts of international organizations in the One Health approach to tackle antimicrobial resistance;
-
the current status and future possibilities of controlling antimicrobial resistance in food, human healthand the environment; and
-
the latest technologies designed to reduce and monitor antimicrobial resistance.
FAO will present approaches to and outcomes of some of its work in supporting low- and middle-income countriesin their efforts to address AMR based on the Codex recommendations. These activities have been supportedby the Government of Korea through the ACT project.
