Training by Republic of Korea to enhance the understanding of Codex texts

Codex and FAO officers took part in a training programme organised by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea (ROK) focused on Codex work and its impact on food safety and fair trade. The training programme on 14 September featured five speakers from the Food and Agriculture of the United Nations (FAO) and the Secretariat of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

Soyeon An, MFDS Deputy Director of the Food Safety Policy Bureau, was among the 50 government officers of the Republic of Korea, ranging from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries attended the training. He said "It was an excellent opportunity to learn about Codex. I gained valuable insights through real-life examples".

Codex and FAO speakers discussed the crucial role of Codex Alimentarius in ensuring food safety and facilitating international trade, the key role of FAO in providing scientific advice to Codex and food safety within the context of the One Health approach, particularly regarding antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, some concrete examples of what constitutes active participation in Codex work were presented to further support the Republic of Korea in continuing to implement the Codex texts.

"Codex Secretariat and FAO's participation in the training course has been an amazing experience - said Markus Lipp, FAO Senior Food Safety Officer - It was wonderful to engage with the Korean officers from MFDS and other ministries" further emphasising the passion of the new generation for food safety and Codex Alimentarius. This collaborative effort further reinforces the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Korea in continuing to ensure safe and high-quality food both nationally and globally.
