Codex: a gift of 60 years

Iraq’s Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control organized a symposium in cooperation with the Iraqi College of Engineering Sciences, entitled “The Importance of the Codex Alimentarius in Promoting Food Safety”. The  slogan of the event was “sustainable food standards, a vision for a better world”, and it served as an introduction to the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

The symposium highlighted the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission and the importance of Codex’s food safety standards . and introduced the National Codex Committee, and its workat the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission, established by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, is the most important international body in the field of food standards. Since 1963, the Codex Alimentarius Commission has developed hundreds of international standards, guidelines and codes of practice. It has defined thousands of permissible levels of additives, contaminants and chemical residues in food. The ultimate goal: ensuring food safety for everyone, everywhere.

The 60th anniversary of Codex is an opportunity to strengthen the role that the Codex Alimentarius Commission continues to play in influencing consumer health and fair practices in the food trade.

and it is also an opportunity to raise awareness about food safety and quality, plan and implement activities to build awareness of Codex and obtain high-level political support for the work of Codex.
