Singapore celebrates Codex@60

The National Codex Office (NCO) under the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) planned several events to promote awareness on Codex in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC).

Codex Workshop 2023
NCO conducted the 1st physical Codex Workshop since the COVID-19 pandemic for SFA colleagues on 14 March 2023 . The workshop started with an introduction to CAC, which emphasized the importance of Codex to Singapore. SFA officers who had more experience attending Codex meetings shared their experiences, challenges, and tips on participating in the Codex standard setting processes. Participants were also divided into groups to discuss various issues brought up at Codex meetings to better understand the thought process behind the formulation of positions for such issues. Overall, this workshop gave participants a better understanding of CAC and effective participation in the Codex standard setting process.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Taskforce on Codex (ATFC)
Singapore hosted the 22nd ATFC meeting virtually from 20 to 21 September 2023 for ASEAN Member States (AMS) and the ASEAN Secretariat. The key objective was for AMS to discuss Codex issues which have been identified to be of mutual interest and importance in preparation for CAC46 of  and other Codex subsidiary body meetings. The meeting discussed several key issues which included the proposed draft MRLs for zilpaterol hydrochloride, draft revisions to the General Standard for the Labelling of Prepackaged Foods (CXS 1-1985), provisions relevant to allergen labelling, and New Food Sources and Production Systems.

A dedicated Codex webpage on the Singapore Food Agency’s website
In conjunction with the establishment of the Singapore NCO and to reaffirm Singapore’s commitment to participate actively and deepen our involvement in Codex platforms, the NCO has set up a Codex webpage on SFA’s website. This webpage highlights SFA’s commitment to food safety, quality, and international regulations, while also serving as an educational resource to inform stakeholders about Codex standards and their importance in ensuring food safety globally. The webpage will be regularly updated to showcase new progress/achievements in Codex-related work.
